I am thoroughly enjoying this series, although all could be read as single books I have read each of the editions in order and find myself thinking in the moment. Phoenix moment that is. I am concerned what I will find to read that I enjoy as much when I run out of new books from this author. Great sci-fi, well written and only one typo in the entire series, very well edited as well as compelling story telling. Richard Sanders has written himself into a firm place as a great writer!

Great action....great characters....exciting plot-line

The only thing about The Phoenix Reckoning I can bemoan is that I have to wait a couple of months for the final part this rather brilliant series - so not fair :( Aside from having to wait for the final part, the first part to the Phoenix Reckoning was excellant - rich and detailed writing by Richard L. Sanders brings to life a universe that is huge in scope. It includes unique alien life, each with its own history that plays a significant part in the events unfolding, particularly the Polarian Dread Fleet which has begun sweeping the galaxy of secular societies - including some Polarian groups and there seems to be no stopping them. Calvin and his crew head towards the Polarian Forbidden Worlds in an effort to stop the Dread Fleet and to finally get to the bottom of who has been manipulating the human Empire, the Rotham Republic and the Polarians. I have really enjoyed each book in this series - the characters have been well drawn, particularly Calvin and his battle with equarius - while he has overcome the addiction itself, Sanders does a good job of the reality of having to battle against succumbing to addiction each day; I also like Sanders empathetic treatment of Shen as he battles the changes wrought on him when he was bitten by a type one Remorii, as well as his insecurities about himself and his ability to be loved by a woman. Overall, I have found the Phoenix Conspiracy books to be both entertaining and gripping - all the way along I have just wanted to know what happens next. Looking forward to March and the final book.

Insightful Look at a Versatile Actor

Biographer Charles Tranberg creates an intimate, flesh-and-blood story on one of the stage and screen’s most versatile actors. Tranberg captures a man, a unique talent, who readily cautioned directors not to let him “ham it up” too much. March brought to life numerous screen characters that garnered numerous Academy Award nominations (Best Years of Our Lives being a personal favorite) and Tranberg covers the actor’s career in fascinating, absorbing detail. March’s marriage to Florence Eldridge, in Tranberg’s skilled hands, is interwoven throughout the book in such a way that you understand what keeps them together despite March’s “flirtations.” Tranberg had access to intimate family letters, which is a real boon to any biographer. Tranberg underscores the importance of Fredric March to younger generation of actors (Robert Ryan, Burt Lancaster, etc.), who had awesome respect for the actor. It’s good that this long overdue project was tackled by author Tranberg – he knows how to dig deep and hit a rich vein – a real human being. Deserving of being remembered

I hadn't seen a great deal of Fredric March's work, although I was somewhat aware of his revered status as an actor. I was drawn to this book having read the author's previous impressive work on Agnes Moorehead and Fred MacMurray. This is really the purpose of Charles Tranberg's book on March: to shed light on the achievements of this actor who, unlike a Bogart or Wayne, was not a personality actor and has had trouble surviving "the test of time." I'm sure glad he did. I am hardly ever drawn to read more on performers who have had multiple biographies or documentaries produced about them and so the under-researched March was a welcome subject. In reading this, I came to enjoy the very funny and hardworking March and to learn about his filming of what should be iconic and well-remembered turns in (his Oscar-winning performances) "Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" and "The Best Years of Our Lives", "The Royal Family of Broadway", "Death Takes a Holiday", "The Adventures of Mark Twain," as well as roles with just about every female icon of the early days of Hollywood, elaborate costume dramas, sophisticated comedies when he had the chance, and later turns in "Inherit the Wind" and "Seven Days in May." March was in equal measure a film and theater actor (winning matching Tony awards) and worked well into the 1970s.

As a PhD researcher, I appreciated especially the effort that Tranberg would have gone through to research this. Not only through examining March's papers and anything about him, but works on the Golden age of cinema and its performers and personnel. You don't just learn a lot about March, his career, and marriage to actress Florence Eldridge, but those around him. I found anecdotes about Miriam Hopkins, for example, to be fresh and a different perspective on this actress, the history of the major studios to be well condensed, and his synopses of films engaging. Tranberg doesn't fall into the trap of rattling off facts about everyone and everything he covers as often happens when someone extensively researchers a topic. If it seems like some parts of the book are detailed treatments of March's films, it's only because he worked so much during his early years in Hollywood. For me, the times March spent away from the screen were particularly interesting, and his response to being branded a communist sympathizer in the fifties is rather dazzling.

I really enjoyed the continuity of the book and felt it provided a multifaceted portrait of Fredric March's personality and work. Like his subject's work, which deserves to be discovered anew, Charles Tranberg has written a biography that should have a home on the shelves of both film buff and more casual fan of the early part of cinema, as well as anyone who wants the work and life of actors of March's generation made accessible and engaging.

Stage or Screen, a man for all seasons.

A very good book on an actor that I am more familiar with on the silver screen. Although remembered more for his screen presence, his many stage accomplishments have unfortunately faded with the passage of time. A well rounded view of his career, a bit sanitized if I may say, somewhat of a wink and a nod to his transgressions which were tolerated due his stature as a performer. Perhaps a little more information on life in Hollywood in the 20's and 30's and March's experience with the studio system and his independence from it.

Excellent Complement to Brooks' The Zombie Survival Guide

The Zombie Combat Manual is not a mere retreading of Max Brooks' The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Living Dead. This book takes one small aspect of Brooks' book and delves deeply and broadly into it.

The Zombie Combat Manual not only discusses various weapons to use in lieu of a firearm; it also acts as a training manual for anyone in any physical condition, featuring physical assessments and exercise programs.

Of course it has the obligatory chapter on offensive and defensive equipment, which is seemingly exhaustive, but it also touches on a topic that Brooks omits, which is carrying and protecting children. Imagine being a parent of a newborn or toddler and having to not only survive but protect them as well. Being a father, I could appreciate this section greatly.

Additionally, there's an entire chapter on combat strategies and techniques for fighting the undead. With this chapter, Ma practically creates a new form of martial art with step-by-step illustrations showing how to position, maneuver, and strike with various weapons in various situations of melee combat with a zombie.

If you're a fan of Max Brooks' interviews in World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, then you'll enjoy the interviews in this book as well. In fact, one could almost plant these same stories into the World War Z setting.

Overall, Lovers of Max Brooks' work, as I am, should not look at this book as a competing product, but instead should see Ma's contribution as a complementary product. The content of this book will only better prepare you in the event that you find yourself having to engage in melee combat with a zombie despite all of the tips and strategies followed from Zombie Survival Guide.

NOT a retread of Max Brook's work!

So far, the five star reviewers before me have pretty much voiced my opinions quite nicely. What I will add is that comparing Roger Ma's book to a rip-off/retread of Max Brooks' work (of which I am a huge fan) is like saying anyone currently writing vampire romance is ripping off Dan Curtis's Dark Shadows (or, if you want to go further back, Bram Stoker's Dracula). Both the vampire and the zombie genre have room for many variations on the original themes. Did Brooks include the Bum's Rush in his book as a survival tactic? No, he did not. Both Brooks and Ma have a place on my bookshelf, and both authors deserve kudos for their work.

An authentic and legit addition to the Romero zombie mythology

I just finished reading this book, and if you're a zombie fan and have wondered how to not simply survive, but to battle and defeat the zombie undead, you will love this book.

As a huge Max Brooks (Zombie survival guide), George Romero (Night, Dawn, Day of the Dead Trilogy) and Robert Kirkman (Walking Dead) fan, this book takes a unique angle to the zombie mythology by focusing where these other writers have not, specifically hand to hand combat against the undead. The book goes into detail about specific types of weapons- long, medium, short ranges, how to best utilized the most battle hardened weapons, such as a katana or battle axe, to the more accessible and practical garage tools like the shovel, pitchfork, or hunting knife. Interweaved within these techniques are some pretty graphic and intense first hand accounts and interviews from those who've battled the undead one on one. Well written (unlike some other zombie pub schlock) this book I think will entertain all hardcore fans, as well as the casual one's who ever wondered how they would handle oneself when encountering a zombie confrontation firsthand.

I can attest after reading this book that it is NOT a rehash of Brooks' work, as some others have previously suggested, but rather a great addition to the genre. My favorite and most original chapter for me is on how to protect your children against the undead. Stroller vs. baby bjorn. Great stuff!

The illustrations are great as well that give visual context to the techniques and weapons discussed. I would definitely recommend it to anyone into horror and zombies. Don't trust the online trolls- when there's no more room in hell, there's enough room in the zombie world for Brooks and Ma to coexist together. And from what I'm seeing from the other reviews online, they agree as well.
