Quantative emphasis on settlement patterns, acreages, external links

Based on dissertation, book is based on data from court and land records of the Eastern Shore. There are many charts. As a result, the analysis is more cross-sectional than dynamic. Information can be useful and confirms much of what I knew from other sources of land ownership and local and external networks and status relationships. I was looking for more information about particular ancestors, e.g. Wm. Stone, and the economic networks that linked the early well-situated and well-connected Eastern Shore settlers to important developments in England, to colonial and Atlantic trade, etc.

As a matove Easterm Shore woman and desendant of Anthony and John West (mentioned as 'kinship' in the text I was delighted with this book. Yes, it is a PhD dissertation adjusted for book publication, but that makes it extremely well researched. Not only the text but the footnotes make very interesting reading. In the process of proving his thesis and correcting previous interpretations of early Virginia social organization, he makes those early settlers lives more understandable to the reader as well as making a 'non-shore" reader aware of the importance of those bayside creeks to the formation of that early society. While I have lived "off Shore" for nearly sixty years, I still in my head define the Shore in my mind as a series of creeks and necks.

About the Author

John K. Fairbank and his wife, Wilma Fairbank, got their first impressions of Chinese life by living in Peking for four years in the early 1930s. In 1936 he began to develop instruction and research on Modern China at Harvard University. During World War II he spent the five years 1941 to 1946 in Washington and in China in government service. After he resumed teaching, his first book, The United States and China, in 1948 reflected his impressions of the revolutionary ferment among the Chinese people. (The fourth edition of this book, revised and updated, was published by Harvard University Press in 1983.)

Professor Fairbank was one of the small number of Americans whose pioneer work in Modern Chinese History gave necessary shape to the field. Surveys and more specialized courses of lectures, syllabi and bibliographies for use in research seminars, conferences on major topics leading to publication of symposia, all contributed to M.A. and Ph.D. training that launched many of today's professors of Chinese history on their careers.

This development also involved the organization of national committees and conferences to meet the many problems of Chinese studies in America. Professor Fairbank has been president of the Association for Asian Studies and of the American Historical Association and has received numerous honorary degrees. He and his wife live according to the season in New Hampshire and in Cambridge, Mass.

Very interesting interpretation

I wouldn't read this book as an introduction to Chinese history of this period. Fairbank's China: A New History, or several other general histories, are better for that. This book is Fairbank's argument that the development of Chinese history was far less heavily influenced by the West than most historians and Westerners believe. He convincingly puts the major interactions between China and the West in Chinese contexts, noting the similarities between Taipei Rebellion and the White Lotus Rebellion, for instance, although the latter event occurred when Western influence was much less. It's unfortunate that this topic is so politicized. Whether China was heavily or lightly influenced by the West should have no bearing on the inherent moral worth of the Chinese people, although many people on both sides of the debate don't see it that way. Nevertheless, Fairbank's topic is interesting in itself. Ultimately, I didn't find him fully convincing (not that I'm an expert), but I'm glad I read his book.

Refreshing Storytelling

If there's one book that I could recommend to the general reader on the history of modern China (i.e. from circa 1800-1985), it would be this book.
To be honest, my first impression of this book is not a very good one in the sense that I did not feel like dancing in joy. This is because the book appears to me to be too simple, lacks good facts and not very scholarly. How could Fairbank write such a book? My expectations were very high or to be precise, I have expected the wrong things. This book is not intended to be scholarly, not intended to bog you down with boring details but is intended to be entertaining and at the same time have enough facts to highlight certain important events.
I bought this book only on a second visit to the bookshop and perhaps due to a change of mood, I find the book entertaining and at the same time enlightening in that it proposes different views on events that have not been considered before. For example, the discussion on the port of Hankow was quite enlightening. This is refreshing and after understanding the intentions of the book, my perception and expectations changed and I was able to see it in a new way. Since then, this has been one of my favourite books on modern Chinese history and will become a benchmark for me to measure good historical storytelling.
Compared to Jonathan Spence's "In Search of Modern China" this book appears to me be more entertaining and in a way, more intelligent. Highly recommended.

Highly readable and authentic

I got this book for the specific purpose of studying China's secular civil wars -- the White Lotus Rebellion (1796-1805), the Taiping Rebellion (1851-64), and the civil war that began with Mao's Long March (1934), culminating in the Great Leap Forward (1959).
Each of these civil wars resulted in massive bloodshed, including executions and famine, and was settled with compromises that lasted only a few decades, leading to the next civil war. This is important today, because the compromises forced on Mao after his disastrous and bloody Great Leap Forward are unraveling today, as peasants are losing their farms and their livelihoods and flooding into the cities. When a future economic downturn occurs, these peasants will be unemployed, with no infrastructure to support them, providing fertile ground for a new rebellion, possibly led by followers of the Falun Gong. This could happen any time in the next 10-15 years.
Fairbank's informal style presents the details of these and other historical events in an enjoyable manner and from a Chinese and China-centric point of view, rather than from the typical America-centric point of view used by other writers. The result is both enjoyable and authentic, and gives us the historical background to understand the revolutionary changes going on in China today.

BRILLIANT !!!!

I LOVE this book!!!! ( both the Kindle version and the hardback)

I now have my hardbound copy ( see original review below). This is even more wonderful than I expected. The book is approx 12" h x 11" w ( in case anyone cares). There are paintings on the actual book cover (underneath the dust cover), front and back, so don't miss them. The Kindle version only shows the dustcover front painting. The photos of the paintings are luscious and large!! Of course, Richard McKinley's text is wonderful- so well written, informative, and fascinating. What I wrote below goes for this version too.

I ordered the paper version (originally due out in May) when I first learned about it and then couldn’t wait that long so I ordered the e-version the first day it came out and am so happy I did. Extravagant, but I’m soooooo pleased.

The info contained comprises some of McKinley’s own history and very much of his philosophy of painting and his approach to painting (with the focus on pastels and oils). He has given much of the same information in his workshops and other conversations (including some anecdotes), and also a good deal of it is covered in his earlier book, his blog, and in his videos. What is lovely about this book is how this all flows together beautifully and although it is instructional, it doesn't feel that way (to me at least). It refreshes older information wonderfully and presents exciting new concepts. He is such an enthusiastic and articulate writer , it always is a pure pleasure to read what he has written.

I love the dedication - it is to all of us, his students - so very Richard. ( And Richard- if you ever see this- thank you for all you have given so many of us.)

The paintings are fabulous! I found myself gasping at some of them. Some I've seen in his blogs, on his website, or in his slide presentations at workshops, but it is lovely to have them right at hand and not to have them either only in my memory or have to go hunting them down elsewhere to enjoy them again. Having an e-book version (Kindlefire HD 7) is great. I can zoom in for decent quality closeups and highlight or note some of the text without actually marking up the book. I can also view this book on my computer with the free Kindle app but my zoom ability seems limited by the size of my computer screen. The photos are well sized, but I am greedy enough to want to see them even larger on the computer. I’m very pleased with the e-version , but I can hardly wait to get my paper copy to actually turn the pages and hold in my hand.

If you are a Richard fan, and aren't currently waiting for the paper version to come out next month, you may want to get this- or check it if you know someone else who does have it already.

Obviously, I REALLY like this book! For me, at least, it is a gem of the highest quality. Exquisite.

Highly recommended! Sam is back with a vengence.!

Sam is back from the dead! And dropping right back into the thick of things as usual!

In Fallout, Sam has been sent to Hungary to do a quick check into the death of a fellow agent. Seems straightforward enough that she invites Brock, the oh so hunky boyfriend, to join her in Budapest for some much needed R & R and a little personal time.

But almost as soon as she gets there she is ordered to come home at once by her bosses. They need her back for a Top Secret reason they won't even tell her about. When she knows she's being watched and followed, Sam, being Sam, ignores the boss and goes on the offensive to find out who is following her and why.

It's hard to tell the good guys from the bad guys and Sam is determined to get to the bottom of things.

With Fallout, Mr. Emmerich has once again shown why we so eagerly wait for the next book to come out. The characters have become like old friends and we are fully invested in every outcome, rooting for Sam and her team and holding our breath as we turn each page.

One of the best books I've read in a long time. If you are a fan of Flynn, Child and Patterson, you are in for a real treat with the Sam Jameson series!

DON'T START IT UNLESS YOU'VE GOT A WEEKEND FREE!

This is a true "page turner", but I couldn't get through it in one night (although I tried). I would recommend reading the "Sam Jameson" series in sequential order, to fully appreciate the character development. I didn't do this, and still thoroughly enjoyed this book, but found some references to what had obviously happened in the past just a little confusing. One very small bone to pick would be what I would consider the inconceivable physical attributes enjoyed by our protagonist. After having been stabbed through the stomach with an iron pipe and left for dead, she is "rescued" and treated overnight by a conveniently located Mossad clandestine team with a doctor. She is sent on her way the next morning with a pocket full of aspirin, able to scale fences, run down the bad guys and otherwise do what needs to be done. While she does admit to being in pain, and has a bit of a limp, she does remarkable well for somebody with the injuries she sustained less than a day before. Ignore that, like I did, and just read it for the sheer excitement of seeing how many critical situations she can handle and how many bad guys she can kill. A great read! Ed B.

I was given this book in exchange for my review. If you've never read a book by Lars Emmerich, then you need to! Fast paced, action backed, all his books read like an action movie. And this book is no exception. Give yourself a treat and read this book. You won't be disappointed. I love Sam Jameson. She's a wonderful, flawed, realistic, action hero.
