For psychological mystery fans

In Passage South, Ireland, the murder of the American art dealer Evangeline Walter would be difficult enough on the townsfolk, but the way she was tied to a tree on the edge of the Glar River made for an even eerier sight as if she floated on the estuary. The village's only police officer, Garda-Sergeant Francis Recaldo has no experience with homicide, but quickly realizes his "innocence" (as a cop that is, not as a lover of a married woman) is over once he sees the corpse.
Francis begins making inquiries by seeking links between locals and the victim. As he digs deeper into Evangeline's affairs in Passage South, Francis finds himself in the worst scenario he could imagine, as the prime suspect is Cressida Sweeney, his clandestine lover.
Psychological mystery fans know that Gemma O'Connor walks on water when it comes to an entertaining who-done-it with deep characters struggling between self actualization (in terms of duty and honor) vs. personal desires and secrets. WALKING ON WATER has that and more as the police procedural is cleverly designed so that the audience looks over the shoulder of Francis while also seeing inside his gut. The townsfolk and the victim (when she was alive and through the investigation) make the village real and the torn lead protagonist's agony genuine. Ms. O'Connor provides readers with a triumphant perceptual murder mystery.

Pleasant read, nice mystery.

A lovely little example of a modern cozy. The book kept me reading far past the time that I had alotted myself to read. O'Connor created some believable and sympathetic characters who behave with just the right amount of natural obstruction (and no more). Her Garda Sergeant Recaldo is fresh character, and a likable one.
Small flaws: the details felt a little bit ragged in some of the places the plot was spun around Mrs. Walters and it was not always clear with which of the three policemen we were dealing.
Minor quarrels, these. Well worth the effort.

Good Atmospheric Mystery Novel

Set in a small coastal village near Cork (although the town and area around Passage South are fictional themsleves) we find former big city Garda Francis Recaldo tucked away in the sleepy coastal town until he finds himself in the middle of a murder investigation after Evengeline Walter an America living in the area is found dead. The plot mostly is based around Recaldo's relationship with Cressida Sweeney and her furtive relationship with Recaldo yet seeming involvement with the murder. The main characters are well put together as is the small village of Passage South and setting within which the story all takes place.

Drawing from six living faiths (Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Taoism), this book philosophically analyzes relations between art and religion in order to explain how the concepts "art," "beauty," "creativity," and "aesthetic experience" find their place or counterparts in religious discourse and experience. Coleman repeatedly shows that aesthetic ideas can serve as bridges to spiritual categories, as when he relates aesthetic bliss to "the peace that passes all understanding."

The author follows a three-fold approach; first, he examines ideas and motifs from religious classics in world literature, such as Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching and The Interior Castle by Teresa of Avila, in order to relate them to aesthetic phenomena. Second, he turns to the statements of artists, such as Leo Tolstoy, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Shih-t'ao, and Wassily Kandinsky, for themes and practices that have religious significance. Third, he analyzes and evaluates the writings of various theoreticians--philosophers, theologians, art critics, sociologists, and psychologists--on the relations between art and religion. Coleman demonstrates, for example, that Martin Buber's I-Thou relationship captures much that is central to art, creativity, and aesthetic experience as well as to religious life.

Among the themes that receive sustained treatment are: the varieties of union in art and religion, the child as a paradigm for artists and saints, and creativity as essential to religion. Finally, the author critically weighs proposed distinctions between art and religion and between the broader categories of the aesthetic and the spiritual, rejecting some and showing how others are compatible with his proposal that the aesthetic and the spiritual are cognate categories.

Earle J. Coleman is Associate Professor of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University. He is the author of several books, including Varieties of Aesthetic Experience and Philosophy of Painting by Shih-t'ao.

Articulate and Mind-Opening

I rented this book from my university's library, intrigued by the title. Being both a highly passionate artist and a deeply spiritual person, I was immediately interested. I have always suspected that there were relations between artistic and religious acts, and author Earle J. Coleman expands on this theory, with a lot of illuminating, penetrating insight. He discusses that both art and religion involve a communication and inspiration from a divine source (possibly the same source) and that all artists and theologists should strive to remain in touch with that divinity in many ways, such as expressing your inner child (in order to be open, faithful, and nonjudgmental), being a receptive vessel for inspiration and creative energy, and setting aside shallow ego desires in order to be fully immersed in the creative/spiritual process. Coleman states that while he does not believe that art and religion are completely intertwined, he believes that the two subjects intermingle in many ways like the creative art and fables found in religions and churches, and the transformative, cathartic power of creative work. Reading this article renewed my passion and faith in my craft, as well as the enigmatic Higher Power that works through me in order to express that craft.

About the Author
Kopit is the author of many plays, including End of the World and The Road to Nirvana.

Gaston Leroux was a French journalist, short-story writer, and novelist, and is most famous for his acclaimed novel, The Phantom of the Opera. A student of law, Leroux turned to journalism after spending his inheritance on a lavish lifestyle. Over a decade of work as a court reporter and theatre critic for the L ?cho de Paris served as inspiration for his series of successful detective novels featuring Joseph Rouletabille, an amateur sleuth, and Leroux s contributions to the French detective genre are considered as significant as those of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Edgar Allan Poe. Leroux died in 1927.

Phantom by Maury Yeston

I have seen the Lloyd Webber version two times and the Yeston version four. There is no way that the Lloyd Webber version can match up to the Yeston version. In this book you learn more about the character of Erik, he has a sense of humor, an aching heart, and a love for Christine. You learn how he met Christine, who his parents are and why he loves Christine. The Lloyd Webber version is spectacular and I will always love it, but it is very vaugue, and for those who wish to know Erik (the Phantom) this is a very good book to read.

The Real Phantom!

Andrew Lloyd Webber just beat Yeston and Kopit to the punch and got to B'way first, but had it been the other way around, this music would be even more memorable than the ALW Broadway version. The words and music are wonderful all the way through and you will sing and hum these tunes for a long time. BTW, If you get to see the stage version of this great play, you will also notice the stronger characters and story line.

Music book came to me in good condition. Yeston/Kopit a Rare and special version of Phantom!

I don't know whether to give 4 stars or 5, as that I'm still looking at the songs. The Yeston/Kopit play is a rare interpretation of Leroux's "Le Fantome" tale, as also is the Yeston/Kopit novel (more on that later) -- and the booklet full of songs came to me in very good condition, the shipment being obviously done with care.

[EDIT: maybe I'm just being a bit of a fan right here -- I'm biased in favor of Yeston/Kopit's Phantom/Erik over the more usual ALW Phantom/Erik -- sorry, can't help my bias.]

(Yes, still in the process of looking at the music book, to learn the new songs -- and I'm keeping this music book.)

Hoping to later get the Y/K Phantom novel (1970s) on which the late-1980s Y/K musical has been based upon.

Hoping that some day there will be more and more Yeston/Kopit Phantom-related material that one could easily buy, including the complete libretto to Maury Yeston's musical "Phantom" and Arthur Kopit's novel -- and, of course, the musical recordings, both on CD and on DVD, featuring both Richard White and Charles Dance as "Erik Carriere" A.K.A: "Le Fantome".

In other words, I want more Phantom-related Yeston/Kopit material -- please: More! [This is for Amazon-dot-com employees to read: more Yeston/Kopit stuff, please, so that I can buy the items one at a time.]

Hypercomputation is a relatively new theory of computation which treats computing methods and devices that transcend the Church-Turing thesis. This book will provide a thorough description of the field of hypercomputation, covering all attempts at devising conceptual hypermachines and all new promising computational paradigms that may eventually lead to the construction of a hypermachine.

Readers will reach a deeper understanding of what computability is and why the Church-Turing thesis poses an arbitrary limit to what actually can be computed. Hypercomputing is quite a novel idea, and therefore the book is interesting to the reader in its own right. The most significant features of the book, however, will be the descriptions of the various attempts of hypercomputation: from trial-and-error machines to the exploration of the human mind treated as a device with computational abilities. Sweden, and a Ph.D. in Theoretical Computer Science from the Democritus University of Thrace, Xanthi, Greece. He has published papers in the areas of categorical semantics, natural computing, programming language theory, Web-oriented technologies, and digital typography.

In addition, the prospective author has presented his work in the workshop of the European COST Action Group 16 (Multivalued Logics) that was held in Vienna, Austria in 1998. He is also the team leader of the Greek Molecular Computing Group, which is a member of the European Molecular Computing Consortium, whose director is Professor Grzegorz Rezenberg. He was also member of the Democritus University team on Industrial Mathematics of the European Initiative on Mathematics in Industry. Last, but not least, it is worth to mention that recently the prospective author has published a book on the Perl programming language (in Greek).

A good introduction to hyper-computation

The basic objective of the usual computability theory is to develop algorithms to solve certain classes of problems. The well-known Church-Turing thesis imposes on the standard theory strong restrictions. Hyper-computation constitutes a kind of extension of standard computability theory, not restricted by Church-Turing thesis. Its aim, so we could say, is to compute the usually uncomputable. The book under review presents a good and elementary introduction to hyper-computation, its difficulties, its methods and part of its story. The book deserves to be read by anyone really interested in hyper-computation and related topics.

great compendium of hypercomputation

Apostolos Syropoulos has written a great reference book. This book condenses and presents many of the developments in hypercomputation in a straightforward way. if you are exploring computation beyond the turing machine, this is the place to start. It covers all of the bases and is very accessible, especially for this kind of material. At the end of the book is an entry for Apostolos Syropoulos own research (C systems and fuzzy membranes) and I thought it was the most interesting of all.

fyi, the binding of the book is pretty poor in my copy as sections have detached from the spine but that is on Springer.

Definitely the kind of book to take with you all the time

I love this book. It's packed. If you're a science fiction writer - it would be a great place to get ideas.

There is a lot of mathematics in it, but it's pretty easy to understand if you have a decent background in mathematics - if you understand the Turing Machine as given by Penrose in The Emperor's New Mind (1989) - you can understand this. You don't need to go through every axiom to get value out of it. The author definitely gives enough information in English so that you can understand what is going on.
It starts with the simplest Turing machines and goes on to the limits of computability and what can be achieved with black holes, a continuous Universe (space/time is continuous) - with very elaborate Turing type machines (which we already have). He discusses the Chinese Room, Roger Penrose, and so on.

This goes great with philosophy such as that of Daniel Dennett as given in Consciousness Explained, for example.

basically sex

Oh the title alone should was enough to know it was going to be a steamy book. It's so hot when an older women seduce a younger man especially a smok'n hot virgin! I felt bad for Tre since it seemed Shea didn't have any regard for his future knowing what would happen after she seduced him. It however was made clear it was Tre's choice and it was a choice that was coming wether it was her or not. Well after that it just got steamier from there. They couldn't keep their hands off of each other. Trouble comes along and Tre turns out to be more than the hot sexy preachers son. The last book an event happens that changes everything. You will have to read to find out if Shea ends up falling in love with Tre or if it's just a sex thing.
Lot and Lots of sex throughout. Ending was fabulous!

Fun Fast Fantasy Story

When I started reading this series the song Mrs Robinson by Lemonheads popped into my head and was stuck there the entire read. LOL

In a nutshell, a young and naive preachers son is seduced by an older woman.

All 3 books are short and get straight to the point, and so the progression of this story is very fast. Books 2 and 3 continue on where the last one left off and therefore you need to read them in order.

I didn't find myself swooning over the male character, Tre, but for me that was because he was young and naive when it came to women and sex. Shea came across as a total cougar and I was waiting for her to growl. :-D They were a likeable couple though.

As it's an erotic novella series there are some seriously steamy loves scenes that are for adults eyes only. I'm happy to report that there isn't an insta-love aspect in this story but more so an insta-lust. Their love grows over the progression of the 3 stories.

My only gripe is that I found it a little corny at the start, otherwise it isn't a bad read if you looking for a complete fantasy story or a good "quickie". ;-)

A fun fast read 3 stars!
