This book is a great addition to the move by move series by Everyman Chess because it continues with the trend of recruiting chess coaches and active players to write on chess opening .I recommend this book with a minor caveat. Players looking to use this book as a primer on the Alekhine need to read the book backwards because at the class level the minor continuations such as 2.Nc3 and the aggressive options such as the Four Pawn Attack and the Chase Variation are popular and critical. A great book (!)

This review was written partially as a rebuttal to the earlier One Star review. That reviewer got very upset by the semi-political remark in this book which had 'Bush' and 'Hitler' in the same sentence. I dont think the author was going to directly compare the 2 persons but this statement can be loosely interpreted. I do agree that Political statements should not be placed in chess books.
However leaving politics aside and just going over the chess material this is a really great book.

The author shows some great lines vs. the topical modern variation which is currently the number one choice of Strong GMs from the white side of an Alekhine defense. He shows the best line for black to combat it and concedes a slight edge which is a normal one from white side. He also shows another offbeat line , the Westerinen variation where Black moves ..Nb6 anticipating the C4 move by white. This line looks unclear and further research and master level (IM/GM) games are needed. It is a very good unbalancing try. Althought the main game shows that white indeed retains an edge, other tries by black in the main lines are shown which leads to an unclear game.

The other chapters are also well written especially the 4 pawns attack. I have not gone thru these chapters in detail but after going thru them, i will give Alekhine's defense another try. I used to play it but gave it up after varying results, I won some games and got crushed in others.

This is a true labor of love. The only caveat is the book is peppered with 'Pithy' comments by the author. Including the politically laden one which so upset the previous reviewer. Relax Sir, this book aint that bad to merit a ONE Star.

I will give it FIVE Stars for the chess centered material, leaving aside politics and history.

I have been a French player, and enjoy how the author demonstrates the pattern similarities and differences in opening ideas. The move by move format allows me to check my thinking with an IM and later with a powerful chess engine.

Ignore the fatwah!

This is THE book I wish I'd had before I gave up playing the Alekhine defense a decade ago, mainly because of the dreaded Voronezh system. There are antidotes to this and other attempts to punish Black for his impudent knight sortie, and Mr. Lakdawala is considerate enough to provide alternatives tailored to the varied temperaments of his readers. Having tried this book out with a student (whom I was unable to dissuade from playing the Alekhine's) I can say that he was able to replicate the feat Mr. Lakdawala recounts in this book, namely to play successfully against a stronger opponent with a minimum of study, grasping only the key concepts, having studied one or two well annotated games.
But a word about the hysterically absurd review that gave this book one star and urged readers not only to boycott the books of Mr. Lakdawala, as well as the entire list of publications by Everyman Chess. Please read the rebuttals appended to that review to form your own conclusions, and if like me, you see the monstrous distortion of argument for political purposes of that reviewer, you will wish to uphold the traditions of free speech and inquiry that are the cornerstones of the Western tradition by BUYING, not only as many books by Mr. Lakdawala, but published by Everyman Chess as well. Do not let the opponents of freedom, be they Middle Eastern terrorists, or middle aged Americans ignorant of history, win!

Carole M. Counihan is Professor of Anthropology and the Director of Women's Studies at Millersville University in Pennsylvania. She is currently the editor of Food and Foodways. I love this book

I love this book. I have been living in Italy for 13 years now and it was like listening to my Florentine mother-in-law's stories all over again. It has also been helpful in understanding the roles of women married to Florentine men no matter where they come from themselves. Interesting stories are told in a realistic way bringing World War II and the good times of the 1960s alive.

Why we love Florence and Tuscany

Have you ever wandered through a Florentine neighborhood before lunch, smelling indescribably good scents wafting through open windows, hearing families talk to each other, and wondering what it is they are doing, and what they are eating? If you have, this book is for you. Around the Tuscan Table is an endlessly interesting and very readable saga of how modern Florentine families and Florentine food have changed in the last few decades, rendering the mysterious stone streets and people of Florence infinitely more real for the traveler and Italophile. And this ethnography also provides great recipes for simple, tasty Florentine food; the straccoto recipe has become a family favorite. Straccoto is Italian pot roast, with the sauce served over pasta as a first course. It is delicious.

This book is a marvelous antidote to the endless up-market mythologizing of Tuscany. It seems that we simply can't get away from `Tuscany as the promised land' - a place where rich Brits and Americans can buy a farmhouse and pretend, a la Marie Antoinette, to be earth-grimed farmers - of artisanal olive oils. Tuscany has become a kind of iconic play-land for the wealthy and bored cosmopolitan. But what of the Tuscan people? As a frequent traveler to Tuscany, I am thrilled that this book has been published. For too long the writing of all things Tuscan has been from the perspective of the expatriate - the émigré viewing a mythologized culture viewing the émigré, with the Tuscan landscape and people somehow magically preserved in a state of 19th century splendor, or squalor, depending on the purse of the observing expat and the state of the `villa' she or he has purchased. Dr. Counihan's book provides us with a welcome picture of how Florentines live and eat - as well as some of the best and simplest recipes for home cooked Tuscan meals available.

Rather than assuming an unchanging social and physical landscape, Dr. Counihan chronicles the changes in place, attitudes, habits, and social relations over decades among the family of her ex-husband. Her training is in anthropology, and she is a well-known and highly-respected scholar of food and identity, so it is inevitable that her book should focus on food as a metaphor for social change through time. However, this is no dry anthropological tome, it is readable, interesting, and highly informative. By relying on the many years that she lived in Italy, married to an Italian, she is able to give us a picture of Italian life not available to many Americans. She also teaches us about food change - how prosperity has altered Italian habits and attitudes, and how Italians feel about the many changes their country has undergone since World War II. We, as outsiders and traveling Americans, often view the Italian people as somehow unchanging, unmoving in culture and tradition. This book changes that perspective, allowing us to view the dynamism and modernity of Florentine families - and to have a much better understanding of why the streets of Florence smell so good at lunchtime... and why the mystique of Tuscan food and livelihoods is so compelling to Americans.

Fantastically delicious

Counihan set out to examine Florentine foodways through interviews with twenty-three members of an extended family broken down into, an older generation, a middle generation, and a younger generation. Counihan lived in Italy from 1968-1984; she was immersed in the culture and more importantly immersed within the family portrayed in this book. She points out that anthropologists have paid little attention to Italy's rich and diverse urban culture. To recify this, she seeks to fill this gap in anthropological research by focusing on food to discuss Florentine identity, family, gender, history, culture, and society. Even though Counihan's book is geared toward fellow anthropologists her writing style is accessible to all. The book is easily read and understood, she also avoids using the technical jargon that is so common to academic writing and often quite confusing to people outside of the discipline.

This book is a fascinating portrayal of Florentine cuisine and culture from the perspective of ordinary citizens. Counihan's close relationship with the interviewee's allows for an intimate portrayal of the Florentine foodways through their food-based memories. The book is well-written, engaging, well researched, and most of all entertaining.

Henry Bieler Saved My Life!

This book, and the doctor who wrote it, saved my life. When I was 20, I was dying of SLE. I was taking 60 mg of prednisone, I had pericariditis, bi-lateral lung effusions and of my body was wracked with pain! But then I met Henry Bieler, MD, and I used his techniques to heal. I changed my died completely and followed his advice. The book seems somewhat "old fashioned" now, but Henry Bieler was born in the late 1800s, and I think he died in 1971, at 93 in a mountain climbing accident! What a way to go! What he said in 1965 is still valid!

Let's get back to Eden!

We desperately need more books like this. In an era when our pharmaceutical companies, Public health agencies, medical establishment continue herding us to ingest synthetic, experimental and toxic "medicines" we need to be reminded that what drives those systems is simply greed, not an authentic drive to heal (so every year we must endure "walks" and "marches" to "cure" this or that). Most of "health care" is in essence guess work and allegiance to flawed theories about the real causes of illness. Doctors are not educated as to the link between nutrition and repair and/or restoration. Their instincts have been trained out of them reducing them to being glorified "drug dealers."

God endowed nature with all the necessary ingredients to help our bodies heal themselves. The obsessive and fruitless "virus hunting" and microbe blaming has not brought us any closer to resolution or eradication of diseases (and please don't believe the "vaccine" hype!). Until the common people learn to take charge of their health, we will continue being exploited via these fear based "health care" messages. Diseases are caused by disruptions in the body due to dehydration, malnutrition, environmental toxins (ask those polio and bladder cancer victims forced to inhale carcinogenic fumes, etc.), stress, poor hygiene, substance abuse, etc. all immune suppressing conditions alone or in combination.

Then we have to contend with the likes of Monsanto who once again pretend to care about "food" production when it's really about filling their deep pockets. We've been duped for way too long. Too many die from preventable diseases, unnecessary procedures and health care professionals clueless as to how the body actually works. It's so bad that they gave it a name: Iatrogenesis....after all is said and done our health care professionals (doctors especially) are still "practicing" medicine!

Way ahead of his time!!! Advice hasn't changed a bit!

I have one of the first publications. It belonged to my dad & he credits it with saving his life.
After the doctor telling him, he would not live to see 35, he bought this book. HE LIVED TO BE 90YRS OF AGE!

About the Author

Robert Stine holds a PhD from Princeton University. He has taught at the Wharton School since 1983, during which time he has regularly taught business statistics. During his tenure, Bob has received a variety of teaching awards. Bob also actively consults for industry. His clients include the pharmaceutical firms Merck and Pfizer, and he regularly works with the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia on models for retail credit risk. This collaboration has produced three well-received conferences held at Wharton. His areas of research include computer software, time series analysis and forecasting, and general problems related to model identification and selection. Bob has published numerous articles in research journals, including the Journal of the American Statistical Association, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Biometrika, and The Annals of Statistics. He was recently awarded the 2011 Helen Kardon Moss Anvil Award for outstanding teaching quality at the Wharton School.

 

Dean Foster holds a PhD from the University of Maryland. He has taught at the Wharton School since 1992 and previously taught at the University of Chicago. Dean teaches courses in introductory business statistics, probability and Markov chains, statistical computing, and advanced statistics for managers. Dean’s research areas are statistical inference for stochastic processes, game theory, machine learning, and variable selection. He is published in a wide variety of journals, including The Annals of Statistics, Operations Research, Games and Economic Behaviour, Journal of Theoretical Population Biology, and Econometrica.

 

Bob Stine and Dean Foster have co-authored two casebooks: Basic Business Statistics (Springer-Verlag) and Business Analysis Using Regression (Springer-Verlag). These casebooks offer a collection of data analysis examples that motivate and illustrate key ideas of statistics, ranging from standard error to regression diagnostics and time series analysis. They also have collaborated on a number of research articles.

Fine text, but lack of CD datasets makes some exercises impossible

Pros: The text itself does an excellent job at presenting basic concepts and examples, and relating the material to realistic scenarios as one encounters in the business world (quality control, political polling, etc.) The starting point of the text is appropriate for those with no prior knowledge of statistics or, perhaps, data presentation. Thus, the first chapters aren't exactly page turners. Nonetheless, I find Stine's later chapters (14/30 onwards) provide a good shelf companion for those occasionally needing to refresh their knowledge of various tests and inference methods.

Cons: My main issue with this *Kindle edition* comes from the fact that a relatively large number of problems and exercises at the end of chapters call for datasets on a CD which is not supplied with this digital version. Sadly, the publisher's website is of little help here. If only there existed some sort of technology that would allow people to download files remotely...

The book is an exact copy of the original textbook, just black and white and without page numbers that match the original textbook. But the answers to the questions at the end of every chapter makes up for it!

Really bad statistics textbook

First off, I have no clue why my professor actually chose to use this textbook; you would think that a very knowledgeable statistics professor would know better than to use such a verbose, pointless, and confusing textbook. The textbook is poor at explaining the concepts of statistics. Statistics as a whole is not that confusing, but this textbook makes your head spin. After a quarter of confusion, I am opting to purchase a better textbook. If you are choosing this textbook to learn about statistics, think again. There are other books out there for you!
