Michael M. Sage received his Ph. D from the University of Toronto in 1973 and has been a member of the faculty of Classics at the University of Cincinnati since 1975.

A book by a scholar for scholars

This is a book by a serious scholar that might be useful only to other very serious scholars. Those lacking a PhD in ancient Roman history may sometimes feel that each page contains more hair-splitting details than the page before it.

There are NO diagrams, pictures, photos, or illustrations.The vocabulary is sometimes intimidating. (I have a bachelor's degree; I'm a summa cum laude graduate. I've vacationed in Rome and Athens and enjoyed lectures given by scholars with PhD's in Ancient Roman Studies. However, I found Dr. Sage's vocabulary to be unnecessarily complex.)

Even the overviews expect the reader to have knowledge of the subject matter and the vocabulary.
Those who are looking for pleasurable reading should look elsewhere (perhaps to Roth's ROMAN WARFARE).
Those interested in near microscopic precision will admire this book.

An insightful view of the Roman military tactics of the early Republic. I would have preferred more detailed information--but sources from this period without bias are rare and incomplete at best--a good effort--although a bit high on the price.

Mysticism & the Limits of Science/Knowledge - Amazing Book!

This is an amazing book. It covers such an interesting variety of topics, including mysticism, negative theology, the limits of logic and the scientific method, the limits of knowledge and knowability. It also provides the best account I've read on Wittgenstein's spiritual tribulations. After reading this book, it is very clear Wittgenstein was gravely misunderstood by his Viennese followers and acolytes. Wittgenstein was just trying to show where the limits of science and logic lie. If you are interested in this, as I have been for many years now, this is a must-buy. The book reads easily, it is packed with interesting, hard-to-find or come-across materials. I have a list of new authors to explore because of this book. Seriously, a list. I had to make many notes on the margins and I have been writing short essays on different ideas presented in the book. I enjoyed this book very much. The only area that the author neglected, perhaps purposefully, is Wittgenstein's comments on Gödel's theorems and Artificial Intelligence. But I am guessing it would have exceeded the purpose and goals of this book.

Kathleen McWhorter (Ph.D. SUNY, Buffalo) is Professor of Humanities and Coordinator of Learning Skills at Niagara County Community College. Look for another health behavior book

After taking several health behavior classes focused on theory, I would say this is the worst book I've ever read on health behavior theory. It's a very hard read to get through because it's not well written, it does not mesh with the current literature on all theories, and it over-emphasizes some very odd examples. Application is important, but by the 5th example, it's redundant. If this is for a class, rent it, do NOT buy it. Trust me, you will never use it again. If this is for your own information on behavior health theories, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. It will not be helpful for you, and I would definitely argue how it presents at least one of the theories it includes.

Easy to read

This is my first review on textbooks. There are just so many textbooks you need to buy as a grad student, but only so few one might actually enjoy while reading/making notes. This is one of those few for me. Very easy to read and follow. I like how authors always had multiple examples to demonstrate how theories and concepts can be applied in each of the chapters. Good textbook!

Much needed and my best pick!

I am working on a PhD in Nursing in which Health Promotion is an integral theory and health an integral concept. I borrowed this text from University of California Berkeley along with many other theory texts. I will likely use the book to help me write my qualifying theory paper and cite these authors for their novel approach to health behavior theory.
The mixing of individual with ecologic perspectives fits my own view while not having to settle on any one theory as the perfect fit because as DiClemente and Salazar explain there is complexity in many ways of looking at health behaviors. The authors highlight many of my favored behavioral theories yet blend the structural environmental perspectives into the mix. A truly original work that not only tells us what is out there but provides new perspectives on understanding what is already known. Bravo, and thank you authors!

About the Author

Philip Graham Ryken (DPhil, University of Oxford) is the eighth president of Wheaton College. Formerly, he served as senior minister of Philadelphia’s historic Tenth Presbyterian Church. He has written or edited more than 40 books, including the popular title Loving the Way Jesus Loves, and has lectured and preached at universities and seminaries worldwide.

R. Kent Hughes (DMin, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) is senior pastor emeritus of College Church in Wheaton, Illinois, and visiting professor of practical theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Hughes is also a founder of the Charles Simeon Trust, which conducts expository preaching conferences throughout North America and worldwide. He serves as the series editor for the Preaching the Word commentary series and is the author or coauthor of many books. He and his wife, Barbara, live in Wyncote, Pennsylvania, and have four children and an ever-increasing number of grandchildren.

About the Author
Howard Sasportas, who died in 1992, was an American who spent his last 20 years in London. His reputation as one of the world's leading astrologers is unparalleled. With Liz Greene, he was joint founder and co-director of the Centre for Psychological Astrology in London. He spent many years as a practising astrologer, and his expertize and experience have been distilled into this volume.

A classic psychological work on the astrological houses

This is as close as anything gets to a definitive treatment of the twelve houses in modern astrology, although there is of course quality stuff scattered through many other books, including the excellent "The Gods Of Change", also by Howard Sasportas. As the author journeys through the houses, there are profound psychological insights for both the beginner and the more experienced astrologer.
The format is straightforward. An introductory section ("a person's reality springs outward from his or her inner landscape of thoughts, feelings, expectations and beliefs"), a quick journey through the houses, and then on to the majority of the book which is given over to a "cookbook" treatment of all the planets and signs in each house. There are countless examples backing up the interpretations e.g. writers and communicators with Sun in the third house, a famous musician and a poet with Neptune in the tenth house and so on.
At the end of the book there is a handy summary of the key concepts for each house, and a look at the different house systems astrologers use. Sasportas finishes the main text with the question, "Why don't you become what only you can become?". Why not indeed!? An excellent book.

Howard Sasportas' book, The Twelve Houses, is a must for any suitable study of Astrology. Such a basic subject as the areas (houses) of life must be thoroughly researched, and this book adds much to one's understanding of each planetary place- ment, & it also has some basic info on Chiron placements, & the moon's nodes. A good overview is given of the houses as process, plus aspects between the houses, & much more (valuable) information! A great reference book for beginners and intermediate students of Astrology!

The best book on houses you will find

The 12 Houses is my favorite book on houses and i have read many. I use this book as my main reference guide for houses for all my consultations and I have found it to be accurate, detailed and very comprehensive.
All the planetary placements by house are described here and very well, with a deep psychological profile as well as examples and facts. I love this book because although fairly simple in its structure ( it looks after all just any other astrology cookbook on houses), the psychology and insight are excellent. It is after all the work of the great Howard Sasportas, such an influencial british astrologer. This is the man that worked for so long side by side with Liz Green and , if I remember well, co-founder of the CPA in London. A non ordinary book from an non-ordinary man, I thoughroughly recommend this book, as you will find it such a valuable tool in your astrologiucal work.
