Wow, I have never been so disappointed...

I don't normally write reviews for books but this was just inexcusable. I (a medical student) was using this book to study for my shelf exam in surgery and I couldn't believe how many mistakes there were in the answers section! Many of the explanations of the questions would clearly seem to say that the answer was, for example, (A) but then the answer listed would be (D). I assume these were all printing errors or something like that. Don't get me wrong, the explanations in this book are great and really helped, but it ended up taking me much longer than expected to go through the answers because I would really have to spend some time figuring out which answer was the REAL answer according to the explanation. And actually there was one explanation that was as far as I know completely wrong, but that may just be due to an outdated question.

In summary, really, with this being the 10th edition of Pretest Surgery, the number of errors in the answer section is really inexcusable. The book did help but I am sure there are other question books out there that may be better. While I generally like the pretest series, I would recommend waiting for the 11th Edition or get another book in this case. Using this book was just plain too annoying.

Look for new interactive palm version

Pretest now has standalone programs of the books (not the cumbersome pdf files). It is interactive in that it lets you choose your answer and gives you immediate feedback with right and wrong choices (no need flipping through pages), allows you to review missed answers, randomize questions and answer choices. Basically, it's a lot like qbank for third year. I used the palm version for surgery and loved it because I always had my palm with me and could do questions while I was waiting for an attending to finally scrub into a case. You'd be surprised at how small little bits of time add up! I finished pretest while only doing questions at the hospital in less than two weeks.

Too detailed of questions, but the explanations atone for it

Although the questions sometimes get too detailed for purposes of Step 2 - type exams, the explanations are excellent and tend to cover more basic facts. This atones for the occasional question that states, "current research states ..." and puts it in the grasp of most medical students. This is a good book to cover (or at least sample) if you are taking NBMLE shelf exams.

Donald Gregory (Portsmouth VA) is a Partner with Computer Sciences Corporation's Consulting Group (CSC). Prior to Joining CSC, he spent several years at Arthur Andersen, International Harvester/Navistar, and Digital Equipment Corp. During most of that time he has specialised in the design and implementation of data and voice communications networks. In addition, he knows a fair amount about operating systems and PC configuration.

Keep looking for "the" one-stop, comprehensive telecom book

I am a senior engineer for network security operations. I bought "Voice and Data Communications Handbook, Fourth Edition" (VADCH:4E) to gain a general understanding of communications technologies beyond the LAN. Although the book mentions all of the systems which interested me, I was not satisfied with the manner in which they were covered. VADCH:4E is better than Ross' "Telecommunications Technologies" but inferior to Green's "Irwin Handbook of Telecommunications." Nevertheless, I'm still looking for an author who delivers the goods on voice and data communications essentials.

VADCH:4E's table of contents is sure to impress; it mentions T carriers, VPNs, X.25, Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI, SMDS, Frame Relay, ISDN, ATM, DSL, SS7, LNP, Cellular/PCS, WAP, 3G Wireless, SONET/SDH, and other key telecom systems and concepts. Unfortunately, I rarely finished a chapter with a good grasp of the material. I desperately searched for clues to questions I felt were key to understanding each technology. Rather than launching into an extended discussion of each system, I would have preferred hearing exactly how each technology works, with comparison to other technologies. More is not better if the "more" isn't helpful!

VADCH:4E is advertised as being "straightforward and jargon-free." This approach supposedly appeals to management types. In reality, the book swings wildly from mind-numbing grade-school-level analogies to material only understood with outside references. A 1074 page book needs to pick a writing style and stay the course. Otherwise, it alienates both nontechnical and technical readers. (Incidentally, technical readers may wonder why the authors believe Windows screen savers contribute to LAN traffic; see page 674 to read this odd claim.)
On a positive note, VADCH:4E consistently offered useful information on the history and business rationale for many telecom systems. Many of the connectivity diagrams were excellent. (These were usually offset by cheesy "clip-art" type graphics elsewhere, unfortunately.) VADCH:4E also includes descriptions of the framing formats for most telecom transmission systems.

Overall, I don't recommend reading a book this large if it doesn't answer the key questions I expect readers to ask. While I'm more familiar with telecom basics after reading VADCH:4E, I still hope another book makes more sense of the telecommunications environment.

Since this is the Third Edition and the copyright is 2000, I expected this book to be more up-to-date. It barely touches on any LAN speed faster than 100M. I thought it interesting that the author considers Frame Relay to be "new and is just now becoming an acceptable means of transporting information". As far as I know, Frame Relay has been around for several years and the use is far spread. It also talks about Cascade Communications, which changed to Ascend Communication in 1997, which in turn was acquired by Lucent in 1999. It also still references US West instead of Qwest. The authors tend to repeat information in the voice section. I would like to have seen more detail on the Data side of communications. The book is a good basic starting point for learning Voice and Data Communications, but leaves too much out to be a good reference book.

Mary Tanana is a designer who is inspired by many things; art, photography, gardening, landscapes and nature. She approaches her work with a boho, edgy flair. She’s had a life-long love affair with anything patterned, and after a long and successful career as as award winning jewelry designer, she has once again embraced her first love of surface pattern design. Mary originally studied fashion illustration, and has adapted her fascination with textures and patterns into a unique design style. Her style is influenced by the diverse art and architecture she observed while traveling and living overseas.

60 Beautiful and Intricate Mandalas in Square Format - printed on one side of page

[[VIDEOID:c6e32326be85dd10faa441c5958e2f11]]I recently purchased a Christmas coloring book by artist Mary Tanana and was curious to see her older offerings. I purchased this book and one other and was really pleased with them though they are very different from “Christmas To Color” (which has become one of my favorite Christmas coloring books.) In Kaleidoscope Mandala Designs, Vol 1 (there are four volumes at the time I am writing this review), there are 60 very lovely and intricate designs. While I am very happy to color small and intricate areas of a design, there are some individuals who may not have the visual acuity to deal with it, at least not without a magnifying lamp and also ultra-fine points on pencils, pens, and markers.

The designs range from open and flowing to detailed and intricate. They are all in a square form in this book, though many have a circular pattern built into the square. They absolutely remind me of kaleidoscopes. I enjoy coloring mandala-type designs – either making the colors consistent or working them in the form of a color wheel. I will enjoy coloring in this book and will be picking up more of the volumes in the near future.

The designs are printed on one side of standard weight white non-perforated paper. The designs stop well before the bound edge (which is glued rather than sewn.) Removing the designs by pen knife or by having the edge removed should be fairly easy.

All of my gel pens and all of my markers (both water and alcohol-based) leaked through the paper. Not a problem with the blank back page. I can slip a piece of chipboard, card stock, or other heavyweight paper (or freezer paper) below the page I am working on and keep the ink from going further and harming the pages below.

Cathy has been a foster carer for over 25 years, during which time she has looked after more than 100 children, of all ages and backgrounds. She has three teenage children of her own; one of whom was adopted after a long-term foster placement. The name Cathy Glass is a pseudonym.

Cathy has managed to do it again! Saving Danny is such a touching, heartwarming book that gives some very good insight into the world of autism. You won't finish with a dry eye. Well done!

Not My Favorite

I think I've read every Cathy a Glass book and gave them all five stars. This one was not a favorite. I felt like it was so much like the others in the beginning. They take their towel to the bathroom, the brush their teeth, they get into bed and may or may not want a hug, etc. Although all their foster children may perform the same rituals, I felt as if I knew what was going to take place before I read it. Perhaps I've just read too many of them. Cathy Glass is a great author and a wonderful care giver so I suggest you read all of these true stories. This one just didn't hold me captive as much.

Liked it but expected a bit better

I have enjoyed all Cathy Glass's fostering memoirs. This perhaps was not as interesting as others. This time Cathy fosters two: Danny, a young autistic boy, and George, his best friend who is an enormous rabbit! Danny's parents were not able to cope with his tantrums and lack of communication and need for ritual.They also have problems of their own despite being a well-off couple.

I like the way Cathy incorporates domestic details in her writing. It makes one realize how a family is affected and involved in foster caring. She describes how she helps Danny overcome his negative behaviors yet accepts his need for ritual and routine, and shows plenty of patience.Danny becomes accepted for who he is and how he is.

However, when Danny is quoted, or his routines outlined, it makes for a bit of repetition and boring reading, but maybe this helps the reader see what caring for Danny was really like.There are a few typos in this book. Also, there are illustrations, such as a drawing of a rabbit, which I don't find necessary in a book geared for adults.One little pet peeve- CG repeats names often in her books: there are two Sues in this one, and there have been a couple of Olivers, two Chelseas, Emilys. Ritas and Beths through her her series of books ! But that's not important- it's just something I notice when I read a good book a number of times- detail. I really enjoy CG's writing and content.

And I am looking forward to CG's two new books, coming in the fall and next winter, although probably months later to the US.Cathy is my favorite writer of this genre- others are just not as good,
