Obviously, these wizards acting in literature can be the writers themselves, but they can also be the publishers, corporations, school boards, teachers, librarians, literary critics, and parents, and these advocates can be conservative, progressive, or any gradation in between. It is the purpose of this volume to interrogate the politics and the political powers at work in literature for children and young adults. Childhood is an important site of political debate, and children often the victims or beneficiaries of adult uses of power; one would be hard-pressed to find a category of literature more contested than that written for children and adolescents. Peter Hunt writes in his introduction to Understanding Children s Literature, that children s books are overtly important educationally and commercially with consequences across the culture, from language to politics: most adults, and almost certainly the vast majority in positions of power and influence, read children s books as children, and it is inconceivable that the ideologies permeating those books had no influence on their development. If there were a question about the central position literature for children and young adults has in political contests, one needs to look no further than the myriad struggles surrounding censorship. Mark I. West observes, for instance, Throughout the history of children s literature, the people who have tried to censor children s books, for all their ideological differences, share a rather romantic view about the power of books. They believe, or at least they profess to believe, that books are such a major influence in the formation of children s values and attitudes that adults need to monitor every word that children read. Because childhood and young-adulthood are the sites of political debate for issues ranging from civil rights and racism to the construction and definition of the family, indoctrinating children into or subverting national and religious ideologies, the literature of childhood bears consciously political analysis, asking how socialization works, how children and young adults learn of social, cultural and political expectations, as well as how literature can propose means of fighting those structures. About the Author

Raymond A. Barnett, a native of California, received his B.A. in mathematical statistics from the University of California at Berkeley and his M.A. in mathematics from the University of Southern California. He has been a member of the Merritt College Mathematics Department, and was chairman of the department for four years. Raymond Barnett has authored or co-authored eighteen textbooks in mathematics, most of which are still in use. In addition to international English editions, a number of books have been translated into Spanish.

 

Michael R. Ziegler (late) received his B.S. from Shippensburg State College and his M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Delaware. After completing post doctoral work at the University of Kentucky, he was appointed to the faculty of Marquette University where he held the rank of Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science. Dr. Ziegler published over a dozen research articles in complex analysis and co-authored eleven undergraduate mathematics textbooks with Raymond A. Barnett, and more recently, Karl E. Byleen.

 

Karl E. Byleen received his B.S., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics from the University of Nebraska. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science of Marquette University. He has published a dozen research articles on the algebraic theory of semigroups.

Long on calculus, short on applications

As an engineer, professor of engineering and high school mathematics teacher, which included teaching AP Calculus and Business Calculus at the High School level, this book was disappointing. It has too many calculus topics and very little discussion of how to apply calculus to real world problems, in business, and other areas.

For example, there is a very long discussion, over twenty pages, of l'Hopitals rule and its variations. Classic calculus books by Thomas, for example, cover l'Hopitals rules in three of four pages, and business applications books such as Larson's "Brief Calculus", don't even mention the topic.

Business and other students only need to learn how to take the derivative of a few, basic functions, and then, more important, apply the derivative concepts to finding, for example, the price that maximizes profits or revenues.

This is really a Calculus book, not a Calculus applications book. Picking the important topics out of the over six hundred pages is left to the teacher. No wonder most teachers develop their class notes from a few, selected, and most important topics from the typical, mathematics text books written today.

Oh, for the good old days when mathematics text books were a couple of hundred pages long and every page covered an important topic with good explanation and only a few, not a hundred and fifty problems, on each topic for the student to practice. This is not meant to criticize this book per se, it is typical of too many mathematics texts written today. Maybe some authors will be encouraged by this review to write a text for business applications that is truly a business applications book... Concise on mathematics topics and strong on their applications.

This finite math book really counts!!

I recommend this book in a heartbeat to anyone taking an introductory college-level mathematics course. I've used this book in courses that I've taught and students love it! Yes, there is a lot of material, but no, who says you have to read every page? It is also a great mathematics refresher! Furthermore, it covers many aspects of the mathematics of finance.

As an ESL teacher, my students and I love this book for my intermediate class. I also use the What A Life! Beginning Level for my beginning class. I bought this book as new but, the book is not new! It is used and there are many handwritings on the pages of the book. However it is very good book. The book has lots of life stories, vocabulary and differerent kind of questions about stories. I like it.

Thoroughly delightful

Strauss gives a familiar and delightful tour of a typical day at preschool.

The scenes in this book are instantly recognizable for children in preschool, who are thrilled to see their experiences reflected so vividly.

The book is also useful for reassuring children who are anxious about starting preschool. It shows them what to expect, presenting preschool in a joyful, comforting light.

The text is written as a poem, with fun word-play that children love to repeat. My favorite lines are: "Hokey-pokey? Okey-dokey!"

The colorful illustrations are incredibly lively -- even the bean sprouts in their sprouting dish look animated and joyful. The illustrations include tiny details which fascinate children, such as a line of ants in the back of the playground.

If you have preschool aged children, you will definitely want to treat them to this book. This book also makes a beautiful gift for grandchildren or the small children of friends.

An "Again" and again book

Hooray for "Preschool Day Hooray!" What a find for toddlers. The short rhyming text practically bubbles with clever word-play, the kind that children like to repeat, making the fun their own. Strauss has zeroed in on the sort of familiar detail children delight in--like rainbow Band-Aids, "tricky" puzzles and "topply" blocks. And the text is mommy-friendly too. I love "picky eaters, (not so neaters)."
Nakata's joyful, exuberant illustrations are a perfect complement to the fun verses. And having the suprise opening-up of the last page is a bonus.
How many preschoolers and soon-to-be-preschoolers do you know? That's how many copies you'll want to order. Consider yourself warned.

Meant for Younger Children than Preschool Age

My just-turned-4-year-old starts preschool this week, and I wanted an uplifting book about preschool, one that didn't focus on scared feelings and nervous gitters (as almost all other first day of school books do) because why encourage your child to have nervous feelings if they weren't there to start with. This book does fit the bill as far as only talking about positive things and not focusing on why it's okay to be scared or how it gets better, etc. However, this book is written for a 2 year old. If a child is going to preschool, they can handle more than 4 words on a page, and they certainly will not get bored looking at a picture on a page for more than 2 seconds, the length of time it takes to read the words and be ready to flip to the next page. My son was wanting more, I could tell. It was too fast of a read and not nearly enough content. The words weren't even in complete sentence form! It'd be an okay book for a 2 year old, or even to help teach a slightly older child to read, but not for exciting a preschooler about going to school.

About the Author
Peter Singer is the Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics in the University Center for Human Values at Princeton University and Laureate Professor at the University of Melbourne. About the Author
Éric Alliez is Professor of Contemporary French Philosophy at Kingston University, London, and Professor of Aesthetics at Paris 8. His many publications in both English and French include The Signature of the World (2004), La Pensee-Matisse (2005) and Défaire l'image (2013).

Jean-Clet Martin is former programme director at the College International de Philosophie, Paris.

Robin Mackay, the translator, is director of Urbanomic and editor of its journal, Collapse. I listened to the abridged audiocassette version of the book. Covey is a master in providing a framework for trust based, employee empowerment. The premise of the book/cassette program is that be developing a set of principles and paragigms that are valid and applicable across a large series of situations and events. Rather than focusing on management - which is performance and situation specific - the focus needs to be on the development and training of a principles based culture where the employee/family member/ etc can apply the principles in any situation. Starting with being trustworthy, then building to trust based relationships, Covey emphasizes trust and the underpinning principle upon which the entire paradigm is based.

The abridged version is a solid and interesting listen and can be completed in just a couple of hours. Worth buying.

Some reviewers bemoan each and every Covey release, complaining that it is re-hashed material. These critics obviously are missing the whole "principles" point. Principles won't change from publication to publication.

If you want to feel rooted and comfortable making organizational decisions, the author points out that this must be done in the context of human needs at the fore. Be prepared to re-invent yourself, and use this book as your guide. I use the word "organizational" so that readers of this review don't misconstrue it as a business book. An organization is described in the text as a group of two or more with a common purpose: read - family, marriage, friendship, school, etc.

Be prepared to review and reflect iteratively, as many of the points made are difficult to grasp on the first pass. This difficulty is likely caused by trying to relate to the material from a faulty and deep-rooted paradigm - I was guilty - , but persevere - it it well worth it in the end.

If you are looking for a "7-Habits" and "Principle-Centered Leadership" rolled into one book, "The Eighth Habit' may be your best bet. I strongly recommend all three in sequence.

Covey is simply the best, if you are prepared to do the hard work... on yourself.

This is NOT the unabridged audio recording of the book. Its a recording of a seminar about topics in the book. I purchased both the audio and the paperback and was disappointed to find that I could not listen to the book as I had intended. It was an interesting lecture but was labeled as what it was. A waste of time and money for a book report that I can't do based on off listening to and taking notes on something other than the book and using the book as reference in my writing.
