Great tribute on underated influential band

What a great book! This was a very enjoyable, and touching read about a band "that should have been." Any Sublime fan will be greatly pleased by this book. Provides lots in inside information about the band history, along with touching anecdotes from bandmates, friends, and obviously, family memebers. While sadness prevails throughout, this is also a cautionary tale to musicians and non-musicians, about the affects of drug use, not only for the individual abusing the chemicals, but for anyone close to them. Wonderfully illustrated, with lots of great photos. Troy Nowell's letter to her son regarding his dad is heartfelt and a great ending to a great book. Imagine what could have been.

Well worth the price

I have been a Sublime fan for years and this is the first book that I feel truly pays tribute to the legendary Bradley Nowell. The pictures alone are worth the price of this book. The entire book, including all text, is laid out amongst glossy color photos. Some pictures are common among Sublime fan web sites, but many are rare and never seen before. The interviews are very casual, which makes it very easy to become absorbed by the book. What a brilliant man, what a loss to society. I have a friend who is having many problems with the same drug that took Brad's life. This book has really helped me deal with the thought of loosing a close friend. A must read for all Sublime fans. A good read for anyone who wants to better understand the hardships of drug abuse. Either way, you won't be able to put this book down!!!!

A must for every die-hard Sublime Fan!

From the moment I got this book, I haven't been able to put it down! If you want to read about Sublime and the life of Bradley Nowell this is the bible! The book has lots of unseen photos of Brad, Bud, and Eric and Brad's family and friends and yes, Louie dogg too! It gives an in dept perception of what a crazy life Bradley led from being devoted to his family and the demons of his drug addiction. If you think you've read and know about Sublime you haven't touch the tip of the iceberg until you read this book! My only regret is not buying this book when it first came out!

You will fail if you rely on this book.

I am writing this review after reading this book cover to cover.

I have scored 99 percentile in all my absites during my residency for that reason I believe I can make some comments about this book to warn people.

This book is extremely incomplete, esophageal cancer, head and neck tumors, breast, trauma, melanoma, anorectal disease is totally unacceptable, no or inadequate staging information. No therapy options based on stage. Most disease processes which are heavily tested are basically glorified definitions. No guidelines reviewed. Lacking most of the details tested on the absite, I am not even mentioning that it is a joke for the score questions.

Even the black fiser book has way more detail and relevant information.

I am also attaching a picture on lip cancers from the book. This is all that's been written, trust me it is no different for larynx or other cancers including stomach, small bowel, gerd, lymphomas, the list goes on and on. Liver pancreas; only section in the book nearly adequate.

Why did I buy this book ? I summarized Cameron's on my black fiser during residency with post-its and unfortunately lost it during my move to a fellowship. I saw the Hopkins name and 600 plus pages and thought this would be a nice way to supplement my other review sources.

This book is awful, it is not even funny to see that it is full of just glorified definitions and word salad instead of clinical data.

Badly executed.

Do not buy or rely on this book either as a supplement for abs or the absites. You will fail. This book is not even suited for 3rd year students.

The book is incomplete. The critical details are missing you WILL be tested on. I don't have a better alternative to offer for a "review" book for you.... Osler review course was good for QE and CE, alternatively stick to SCORE curriculum and look up your questions in Cameron's, but Don't put your eggs in this basket, ie this book.

Disappointed

I pre-ordered this quite some time ago and was really looking forward to receiving it. However, I am very disappointed now that it has finally arrived. I was expecting a greater variety of three-dimensional projects since the subtitle led with the word "origami". There are 13 projects in the book and only 5 of them can be described as three-dimensional. Only 2 or three of them could really be called origami. You would be better served to get a good book on origami and just add your own Zentangle designs. Some of the projects are nothing more than simple cut-out designs glued onto a piece of string. It was also advertised as having 30 new tangles, but I had seen most of them elsewhere prior to the publication of this book. This might be a good book for someone with young children as most of the projects seem appropriate for kindergarten or elementary school kids. I will keep the book only because the price was reduced significantly prior to publication and it would not be cost effective to return it. I have several other books by Suzanne McNeill which are very good, but this one just didn't live up to my expectations.

I bought this book as an extension of projects for students in 'light' art classes, or during free time. I found a fountain of
creative and exciting ideas that can be taken from paper projects to book making ideas, and into clay...and printmaking!

Love the new projects in this book. I'm working on a few different sized stars for hanging in one of my windows at home and have made every other thing in the bok at least once as well as coming up with my own designs.

Great Read! Thank you!

I bought this book because my sister has cancer and I thought it would help me understand the process so that I could help her. Or rather, what should I do to help her? This book gave me a lot of insights and I created a list of things to ask and thing for me to do from this book. The scientific information towards the back of the book was really informative. Great read. I highly recommend it. Thank you! P.S. If you are a health care professional related to Oncology in any way, take note. Ya'll need to up your game.

Great Intro to Linear in Summary/ Flash Card/ Glossary/ Powerpoint Format

This, and numerous of the other Wagmob titles I've read on Kindle are an amazing new addition to your Kindle library. They are very well done for .99 and are often upwards of 200 pages. They are both set up for seamless inline citations and have minimal issues with slaughtering LaTex and illustrations as with many ereader titles. This, and most of the titles, are like mini Powerpoint or flash card summaries that can be used for YOU to teach as well as learn. You can see this in the look inside feature.

For the price, there is a TON of information. This book starts at the basics but quickly goes into key details of vectors and introductory matrices. Linear Algebra is widely regarded as the doorway to higher math as well as numeric solutions and methods for computing, so this topic is key. Together with the calculus books, these are an excellent "further" study list and reference for the whole field, up to date for an amazing price. Adding the other mob series books gives a great, very current look at sytems, tips and techniques, from advanced High School to graduate Engineering tricks, tips and techniques. VERY well written, not some Wiki hack rip off as you see with some cheap ebooks. This is written at an intro HS level, but does cover some beginning linear algebra topics as well as prep for undergrad and summary concepts, with numerous formula examples (these are outlined, but not explained in detail).

But the best point is that the publisher not only gives extensive contents in the description, but also allows the wonderful Amazon look inside feature-- you can literally REALLY see what you're getting before you invest that .99c! Talk about a confident publisher! You and I both know there are Springer titles on these topics that won't let you look inside before spending 200 bucks... Wagmob's "open source" and open review attitude is the best proof of all that they are confident in their writers. Rip off hacks wouldn't dare let you look inside, let alone give as detailed content descriptions as these folks do. This is the kind of confidence we all need when navigating the jungle of online purchases often "sight unseen."

As you can see from the lookie liu and contents, the pedagogy follows a "memory tickler" format, much like summary flash cards or a powerpoint presentation, NOT a text/problems/answers format. These titles are expected to be review helpers and learning ponies-- you study the material in more depth online and in many other places, and these little gems summarize how it all fits together in design pattern-like nuggets.

Other reviews have dinged the instructional design and didactics as too big, too small and not quite just right, but this depends on your goals. If you're studying chords in piano, you need texts, practice and theory, but little summary flash cards, or a slide presenation summary, will help you refresh that learning as well as embed it more clearly and deeply in memory as you use it. If you want to use these as primary study tools, you'll need to augment with textual or online glossaries, because the terms are not fully fleshed out (obviously, this would take a 700 page book!).

Welcome to the Wagmob phenomenon if this is your first encounter! I'm lovin all of them-- THIS is what makes Kindle WAY worth the investment. Highly recommended.

Knut Sydsæter is a Professor of Mathematics in the Economics Department at the University of Oslo, where, since 1965, he has had extensive experience in teaching mathematics for economists. He has also given graduate courses in dynamic optimization at Berkeley and Gothenborg. He has written and co-authored a number of books, of which several have been translated into many languages. In recent years he has been engaged in an attempt to improve the teaching of mathematics for economists in several African universities.

Peter Hammond is a Professor of Economics at Stanford University, where he moved in 1979 after holding the same position at the University of Essex. He completed a BA in Mathematics and a PhD in Economics at the University of Cambridge. He has been an editor of the Review of Economic Studies, of the Econometric Society Monograph Series, and served on the editorial boards of Social Choice and Welfare and the Journal of Public Economic Theory. He has published more than 90 academic papers in journals and books, mostly on economic theory and mathematical economics.

Fundamental Mathematical Skills

This book help students acquire mathematical and economic intuition at the same time. There are numerous end of chapter examples and Excel Supplement with exercises. The ordering of the chapters gives to the students the chance to get started learnig first principles of mathematical analysis: Algebra, equations, functions of one variable, differentiation, derivatives, single variable optimization, multivariable optimization, linear algebra & linear programming. The only omission is the absence of eigenvector math.

The publisher claims that ``Essential Mathematics for Economic Analysis'' 3.ed, is the market leading text in Europe, hence one picks up this book with some expectations. The topics covered ranges from some very elementary material in the introductory chapters to linear and nonlinear programming. The introductions to first-order differential and difference equations are very useful, but probably less than what even some undergraduate students would need. The treatment of envelope theory is better than in most books I have seen. (It is even the standard reference in Wikipedia.) One other feature which sets it out compared to most of its competitors (like Chiang's book) is the relative abundance of good examples and problems, many of them with an economic background. The answer section is almost 80 pages and in addition there is a Student's Manual with extensive answers to selected problems. Compared to other books in the area it has a somewhat formalistic style. This may scare some students, but I think it is useful if one later needs to check the precise formulation of a certain result. I find the book very useful, but as an economist I sometimes would like to see even more detailed economic applications.

A very useful tool for students in economics

The book develops calculus in one variable and calculus in several variables, students that are planning to do courses in undergraduate microeconomic analysis or other subject of economic theory should find the book very useful.

Tools needed in economic theory have relevance in the book and are specially covered, ie: optimization (with constrains), concave-convex functions and comparative statics, differentiation and integration are also included.

The exercises are quite nice and were developed for students start to think mathematically, classical cases in economics are used to ilustrate mathematical techniques. Clearly the book is focused in the mathematical functions more used for economists are polynomials, power, exponetial and natural logaritms.

Graphical intuition is developed within the book, point that I really enjoy because in this way topics as optimization are natural and it clarifies the machinery behind lagrange and KT conditions.

There are solutions for a big group of exercises in the end of the book, and are specially useful the three first chapters for students with low level in mathematics, there basic algebra and logic is developed.

I have used the book to teach maths for several years, hope some day a brazilian portuguese version will be available and our students can enjoy this wonderful book here.

A Call to the Vocation of Secular Monastic

It seems like the fad of the day is for aspiring Christian authors to visit monasteries and write about their experiences. It is almost as if the very surroundings of a cloister will rub off and increase one's spiritual depth. But something about the call of the monastery is more than just a fad. An increasing number of people are adopting monastic spirituality for themselves. According to Br. Tvedten there are currently an estimated 24,155 Oblates of St. Benedict in the world. I am among their number. This almost equals the 25,255 vowed Benedictine men and women. The invitation to Oblate life is being answered by many people today. This book was written for them.

This easy to read book offers an excellent introduction to the vocation of the Oblate. The book is straight forward, respectful and unpretentious. Oblates who read this book will come away with a warm inspirational glow that their calling is appreciated. Those who are interested in lay monasticism will learn enough from this volume to understand what the movement is all about.

Several have commented that this little book (111 pages) is aimed more at those interested in formal ties with a monastic community than those who wish to practice Benedictine spirituality on their own. There is a reason for this, private Benedictine monastic spirituality is an oxymoron. To be Benedictine is to be part of community. This is even true of Benedictine hermits. One may be a contemplative or a mystic alone. One might pattern a personal devotional life after Benedict's Rule. One might even create a private prayer chapel. But these are not the same thing. I played around the edge of monasteries for years before I realized I had to take the plunge or forever be on the outside peeking through the windows.

Is this book for you? The answer is plain. If the title is catchy enough that you are reading this review then you should also read the book. You have already passed the "interest test".

An Invitation to Oblate Life

In North America there is growing interest in Benedictine (i.e. Christian monastic) spirituality. How DO you become a monastic and not leave your day job? Brother Benet's answer is the answer that some 10,000 lay Catholics and Protestants in the U.S. have come up with: namely, become an oblate. Benet explains that to become an oblate is to have a special relationship with a particular Benedictine community, and to try to practice what Saint Benedict taught. That particular monastery becomes the person's "monastic home." Benet explains that the appeal of becoming an oblate includes the prayerful support of a monastic community, a deepening spiritual renewal, and the appeal of Benedictine values including a structured prayer life.

Brother Benet is the oblate director of Blue Cloud Abbey. He extends an invation to become an oblate to any person (man or woman) who is drawn to monastic spirituality but who doesn't want to take vows as a monk. The new oblate joins a host of other Christians discovering this way to deepen their spiritual lives and Christian journey. As Benet says: "This book attempts to explain the calling of an oblate." But rather than a left-brained analytical one-two-three Do-It-Yourself book like we're all used to, Br. Benet weaves a tapestry of anecdotes, historical notes, stories, and descriptions that give one an intuitive feel for the depth and breadth of oblate life, tradition, commitment, values, and milieu. His writing makes an enjoyable read, is often humorous, though is admittedly a bit disjointed at times.

Those wanting to skip right to the "How to" part of becoming an oblate can head directly to Part Three - "Becoming an Oblate." This section gives a brief history of oblates, what is entailed in oblation, why others have become oblates, descriptions of the investiture and oblation rituals, and five simple guidelines for oblates living the Rule of St. Benedict (RB). Those who are considering becoming an oblate should also know something about Benedictine spirituality (Part One) and Benedictine values for daily living (Part Two). These chapters give the flavor of Benedictine spirituality more by diffusion (through the anecdotes, historical notes, stories, and descriptions) rather than by a step-by-step analysis of the RB. For those interested in further applying the Rule of St. Benedict to secular life, see two books by oblates: Norveen Vest's "Preferring Christ", and Esther De Waal's "A Life-Giving Way." Additionally, Benet gives an excellent "Recommended Reading List" (by topic) at the end of his book.

What do oblates actually do? Benet notes that oblates may help out at the monastery, give prayerful support, and are often a prime mediator between the monastery and the world - i.e. they take Benedictine values into the world. He describes how monasteries around the world are continuing to encourage and honor the vocation of the Benedictine oblate, accepting lay oblates as an integral part of the monastic family.

As noted above, this is not so much a "How To" book as "What It's Like Being an Oblate" - and what it's been like through the centuries. If you skim the book looking strictly for "How To" points, you'll likely be disappointed or frustrated. But if you do a slow read and let the descriptions and stories capture your heart and imagination, you will come away with a deeper intuitive understanding of the oblate vocation. I rate this book 5 stars for anyone deeply interested in Christian monastic spirituality who might be drawn to making this closer tie with a monastic community.

For those looking for specific steps in becoming an oblate, here's a quick summary:

1) Locate and visit some monasteries - perhaps those nearest you. For a listing of monasteries in each state and/or diocese, see the Catholic directory (book) which should be available in most monastic, Cathedral, and diocesan libraries.

2) Pick the monastery that most attracts / best fits you. Note that regardless of your gender, you can become an oblate at either a men's monastery or a women's monastery.

3) Talk to the Oblate Director of the monastery, and follow his or her suggested steps (may include study of the RB, attending a few oblate meetings, making a retreat at the monastery, etc.)

4) Become "invested" as an oblate - i.e. make a formal request to become an oblate.

5) Spend time in "formation" (generally one year) - may include classes, meetings, home study, etc.

6) After the specified time, request to make oblation to your chosen monastery.

7) With the approval of your Oblate Director, go through the ritual of oblation to that monastery.

Benedictine life has as a major plank continual conversion. This book helps explain how Benedictine monks and Oblates seek Christ via prayer (the Psalms which were the prayers that Christ prayed) as well as Lectio Divina, stability and even works. A readable and enjoyable book. Benedict was a lay person and he wrote for regular people. Likewise this book was written for regular people who want to learn about Benedictine life. No fancy hurdles to jump.. No complicated idiosyncratic procedures.. The depth of the Benedictine life pursued is ultimately up to the monk or Oblate..
